Home Growers Network

Lismore, County Waterford, Ireland.

The concept of home grown vegetables is as old as man, what is new, is the return to doing just that by many people. In the process of researching the Allotment possibilities it became obvious that there were many more people growing Vegetables in their back garden than you would think. All doing very nicely thank you very much. Generally they are quite happy to "do their own thing" without organisation or association with other home growers. That said, how could a web page help to improve their success rate and therefore enjoyment of their activities?

without becoming involved directly in their scheme of things?

If we list a few things that come to mind: Yesterday I had to clear 2 Sq ft of Salad leaf lettuce to sow Japanese onion seed. My neighbour Jer Varley, rescued the plants from my compost bin, they will now grow away quite happily for Jer. I don't have space to grow Comfrey Bocking 14, maybe someone else does? The wild native comfrey is all around us and provided you don't get seeds mixed in with the leaves they will work wonders for the garden. Where do you get your well rotted manure? Any magic solution to Slugs? Beer trap or Pellets? Planted seeds and now have tons of plants? would you give away the thinnings? I sowed a full packet of Onions I won't have the space to grow the whole lot, want some plants?  Etc....etc...etc.

Which garden centre has the best plants, buying vegetables where do you get best value for money? So many question marks - but you get the idea. Do you see any benefit for you in a Garden Network type of thing, no pressure, no invasion of gardeners etc.

Gardening is good for you !

Fresh fruit and vegetables grown by you do more than merely feed you; the whole process from planting to eating has long been known to have beneficial effects.

We are all familiar with this picture everything on it is just a spade and fork away!, or, raised bed gardening and you can leave the spade and fork at home.
